Printmakers 2020

A Group Print Exhibition
Curator: Moshe Roas
September 3, 2020 – December 15, 2020

The field of printmaking has undergone significant transformation in recent years, with many iconic print workshops closing down.

Printmaking is a discipline deeply rooted in the historical development of art, spanning cultures worldwide. It laid the foundation for reproducibility—the ability to create multiple variations from a single source.

While its origins lie in craft traditions, printmaking has long extended into the realm of fine art, from the introduction of reproduction machines and their artistic use, through Pop Art—most notably in the work of Andy Warhol—and into the interdisciplinary practices of the postmodern era. Today, printmaking encompasses an infinite range of techniques and expressions.

The Joint Art Center at Givat Haviva has chosen to actively develop this important field, offering printmaking courses over the past three years alongside an open print workshop.

The works presented in this exhibition are the ongoing result of a continuous process. Artists from diverse backgrounds were invited to immerse themselves in the rich and multifaceted world of printmaking. The course that led to this exhibition encouraged exploration of techniques and working methods within the medium, alongside the possibility of storytelling—translating narratives into printed surfaces (textile/paper).

Each work offers a distinct story—partly revealed, partly concealed—yet all invite the viewer to engage, reflect, and dive into the layers of color that form the image, the materiality, and the presence of the printmaking craft.
