Connecting 2020

The Art Gallery at Givat Haviva presents
“Through Different Eyes” 2020
Connecting
A Group Photography Exhibition
15.12.20 – 3.9.20

The joint photography group “Through Different Eyes” engaged throughout the year in intercultural dialogue, exploration, questioning, and strengthening the connection between youth from Jewish and Arab societies.

So far, the program has provided participants with close exposure to the central social issues facing Israeli society, including inequality, racism, violence, lack of mutual trust, the erosion of democratic foundations, transparency, education, and more.

In recent months, the participants have directed their skills and passion for the medium of photography toward a space where they can influence an issue close to their hearts—the Jewish-Arab conflict / the creation of a shared society.

The exhibition, titled “Connecting,” reflects the desire and aspiration of the group members to connect in the present, against the backdrop of a fourth election cycle in Israel and a series of crises following the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the challenges and the inability to meet physically, the group continued their work during periods of lockdown and isolation—fostering connections, maintaining engagement, and not relinquishing the complex yet essential bond between the two societies.

The concept of “Connecting” implies a mutual action between two or more people. It is an ongoing process—repetitive, yet unfinished. The exhibition presents visual representations of connections created באמצעות projection techniques, combining the physical presence of participants with projected images, alongside texts they composed collaboratively and chose to present.

Since its inception, photography as a medium has explored reality and the ways in which new statements about reality can be expressed through the combination of images—from photomontage (assembling multiple photographs into a single image, often creating the impression of a “real” captured moment) to Photoshop (where digital tools have made this process more accessible and precise).

Here, a technique is employed that merges the physical dimension with the projected, screen-based dimension, alongside concise text. Each image features no more than two participants in a live role. This offers viewers a new “montage-like” perspective, aiming to bridge the physical and the virtual, while conveying the idea that every era presents not only its challenges but also its solutions.

Ultimately, the exhibition is an invitation to each viewer and visitor to connect—with the medium, with the idea, with shared creative action, and with the hope for more and more connections in the present and the future.
