Getting out of the Bubble

Getting out of the Bubble
A Group Photography Exhibition
The photography exhibition "Leaving the Bubble" presents a unique, alternative, and different perspective from the joint youth group of the
"Through Other Eyes" 2018 program into the lives of Arab and Jewish teenagers just a moment before becoming adults and leaders in Israeli society, through the lens of the camera.
Throughout the year, the joint group learned the secrets of photography and the power of an image in conveying a message. Later on, they went out together to the environments and communities where they were hosted in the participants' homes, getting to know their families. During each family visit, the house and its surroundings became a photography arena for the group members.
The exhibition "Leaving the Bubble" puts into practice a collection of insights from the group members, which were condensed into a core understanding about our lives inside a bubble and the desire and courage required to try and step out of it.
The bubble traps each and every one of us within our comfort zone, the environment into which we were born and to which we are accustomed.
The group members arrived together at the realization that they must shatter this bubble and begin to confront a truth different from their own; that they must find a way to deal with difficulty and disagreement, and agree to observe and discuss the problems and dilemmas that exist in our shared Israeli society.
The intercultural encounter requires courage: stepping out of the comfort zone, being willing to meet face-to-face with a different language, culture, tradition, and customs, and agreeing to get to know new friends who live right here, just on the other side of the road.
Leaving the bubble does not only indicate differences but also highlights similarities and identical places, such as everyone's need to feel and live equally.
Through this special shared perspective, the exhibitors also invite the viewers to understand what bubble they themselves are living in, how threatening and daunting the feeling of leaving the bubble can be, yet at the same time fascinating, meaningful, and even enjoyable.
We invite you, the viewers, to come with an open mind, take part in the experience, and leave your own bubble.

From the Exhibition Participants
"For me, the bubble is the 'institution'. Leaving the bubble, as far as I am concerned, is going out into the world and being active."

"Leaving a bubble for me means entering a larger bubble."
Tarek

Anog
"Leaving the bubble means stepping out of the framework, opening up to more things, getting to know more rather than just knowing my own life, reaching another place, a different routine."
Gal Eisner
"The bubble for me represents normal things. Leaving it means doing new things."
Abdallah
"For me, leaving the bubble means getting to know and opening up to other opinions that I am not familiar with."
Tami
"For me, being in the bubble means acting in moments as I want to and not as I need to, and feeding the monster. Leaving the bubble means acting not as I want to but as I need to, and not feeding the monster."
