Press Release: A New Duo Exhibition at the Givat Haviva Gallery
The Seal of Generations
Edith Kofsky, Lian Sharkia
Curator: Barak Rubin
Opening: Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 12:00
Closing: November 7, 2026
The duo exhibition of artists Edith Kofsky and Lian Sharkia centers on the question: What do we carry with us from one generation to another? Does heredity encompass physical features alone, or does it also preserve ways of perceiving, fields of interest, and manifestations of the imagination?
Conceptually, the works of Kofsky and Sharkia are situated in the space between heritage and free choice. In the joint exhibition "The Seal of Generations", the artists direct their gaze toward the spaces where they grew up: Kofsky turns to the study of her father, Prof. Aryeh Kofsky, a researcher of religious studies; and Sharkia to the family heritage of her grandmother, Samia Shafik Hasnin, a textile entrepreneur whose enterprise helped shape the world of her family. In their works, the artists seek to engage with their personal and family histories and with the translation of their sources of inspiration into a new material language. They suggest that beyond theoretical knowledge or memories, a distinct perspective is passed from one generation to the next, one that finds expression in artmaking.
Kofsky translates her father's workspace into a material language based on paper through processes of imprinting and photochemical development that leave tangible traces of objects from his world on the paper. Sharkia translates her grandmother's textile heritage into a visual language based on photography, textile, and personal material, through layered images that combine biographical details with broader features of the society where she grew up.
