The Way of the Land
The Kibbutz Exhibition at the Givat Haviva Art Gallery
A series of group exhibitions
27/12/24 – 18/3/25
Exhibition Curator: Atar Geva | Chief Curator: Anat Lidror
The Way of the Land, an exhibition presenting four views of 'the kibbutz' in reference to the last year, as an idea, as an address or a home, as a community and as a path, with its members, its upheavals and its way forward.
This is an opportunity for Israeli society to reconsider the place and contribution of the kibbutz. It is also a moment for introspection for the kibbutz, a chance for critical self-examination and also for understanding its power and greatness.

The exhibition that opens in the last days of 2024 deals with the kibbutz and four different views of it, through it and from it, in a year when the kibbutzim, their members and their families, experienced an unprecedented upheaval. It includes four exhibitions that present four views: A look at the kibbutz and its essence through the eyes of eight artists, kibbutz members and former members; A view to the north, through the Kabri Gallery, a Jewish-Arab cooperative gallery in Kibbutz Kabri in the Galilee, the year it was evacuated; The view of two kibbutz artists who each created an artistic-healing process with young persons this year; And a look to the south with four artists, a friendship between two artists, one of whom passed away and the other was murdered, a conversation between art and craft about the kibbutz as an idea and a place.
What happened in these months to the idea of the kibbutz? To its meaning? How does Israeli society view it, and how does the kibbutz view Israeli society? In the days when entire
kibbutzim received a big hug from the citizens of Israel, and the citizens of Israel had the opportunity, albeit a shocking one, to see up close who these kibbutzniks actually are. In the year when members and veterans of the kibbutz were able to say out loud that even if you leave the kibbutz, the kibbutz does not leave you, and proved this by their immediate, full and long-term commitment to their kibbutz, to this day.
The exhibition is a reflection of the spirit of the times and the spirit of the kibbutz that flickers in it. The artists speak of their connection to their human, scenic and natural environment. The kibbutzim, which for many years seem to have been forgotten or provoked opposition - have returned to the forefront and are subject to renewed observation. Over the years, they continue to influence and shape the borders. The kibbutzim artists, those who live in the kibbutz, those who were evacuated and those whose kibbutz has never stopped beating in their heart - do not leave a stone unturned - but continue to turn reality into work material.
Through the four different exhibitions, one can look for the spirit of the people, the complex, tearful, bloody, impossible reality in which we all live and create. In the ways of this land, art is created and the kibbutz is also created anew.
