Waiting Period | 15.1.25 - 1.2.25
15.1.25-1.2.25
New exhibition at the Givat Haviva Art Gallery
Exhibition Curator: Atar Geva |
Chief Curator: Anat Lidror
The
second exhibition in the series The Way of the Land, curated by Atar Geva, is
about waiting: waiting for the return of the hostages, for the end of the
war, for the kibbutzim to be rebuilt and for Israeli society to return to
sanity.
Erez Harodi, a photographer and bereaved son who can be
found wherever there is a protest, shows the pain of waiting, the scream, the
violence, the road, the intersection, the fire and the sign. In the exhibition,
he also shows the photographs of 14-year-old Maya Russo, from Kfar Aza, who lost
her late father Uri Russo on October 7, 2023 and has been since looking for
comfort in a never-ending chaos.
Starting in October 2023, Harodi has been working with Maya, and during
this past year they have been going through a journey together where there is
no teacher and no student, a journey in which Maya is discovering and building
her new world, and probably the old one as well. Maya's photographs also became
an inspiration for a book made in memory of her father and are part of the
book.
Atar Rabina, artist, painter and yoga teacher, works on plasterboards – a typical Israeli material, temporary and perishable, that is picked up from the street and provides the illusion of stability and security. Plaster supports fractures but does not heal them, waiting for fusion which cannot be hurried. Rabina’s layered paintings reveal the slow peeling away of the material, reminding us that we are all transitory, durable for a moment and broken the next.
Tamar Nissim’s video work, Whose mourning is it anyway? shows members of
the kibbutzim who returned to their homes, following many months of living as
refugees after their kibbutz was occupied or evacuated in past wars, and had to
deal with the private bereavement of the orphans and widows, as well as the collective
mourning of the entire kibbutz community.
The exhibition closes on February 1, 2025 at with a
gallery talk event, followed by the third exhibition in the series,
"Distractions", which opens on February 6, 2025.
