My Body ~ Soul ~ Honor ~ Property
The Art Gallery presents:
My Body ~ Soul ~ Honor ~ Property
Solo show by Hannan Abu-Hussein
January 4 – February 22, 2020
Curator: Anat Lidror
A solo exhibition by Hannan Abu-Hussein, closest to her family, her mother, where she was born, Umm al-Fahm, where the roads were recently blocked, by Arab demonstrators (accompanied by a handful of Jews) protesting against violence in the Arab society and the police's failure to act.
One thing that stood out in these demonstrations was the presence of women, including many older women, who chose to take to the streets to clearly voice their protest over this violence, violence that harms both their sons and their sisters; unilateral, irreversible violence.
The exhibition constitutes the third chapter in the trilogy exhibited at the Art Gallery over the past year, which deals with female protest against male society in isreal - In the Jewish society, in the Arab society not and in the world.
All the artists showcased in this trilogy, especially abu-Hussein, look bravely and bring up different aspects in different and conclude that this is still the state of the men or better Sayed: manhood and therefore, the this still is the state of women, in the 21st century at 20-20.
It is not over; it is found in many places in the worst possible way. Society is still dominated by the perception of property and honor; it is still under the rule of the patriarchy.
Hannan talks about the killing of women and about murder in general, violence in the Israeli society and violence in the Arab society, male violence. She also speaks to the woman and to \ about her self;
About the woman who is allowed to do as she pleases, the woman that does what she wishes without permission from a manly force.
About the woman who is allowed to do as she pleases, the woman that does what she wishes without permission from a manly force.
She presents installations and video art in the gallery space; her sense of body and the performance experience are strongly present. Into this space, inside the gallery, which is the heart of the collaborative art center, that is in Givat Haviva, in Wadi Ara, in Israel, she builds the frozen concrete bras, the stretched tights, the threads and blankets at their feet, the woven pencils and the pointed knives. She brings herself in the encounter with a wide range of materials but actually with her own body. It is, we could say, the encounter of a woman with the definition of her own boundaries.
